Four Main Pieces of Heavy Equipment:

Skid Steer
The easiest of the four pieces to learn, the Skid Steer in its normal configuration is a small-sized loader used for shifting materials, backfilling, and cleanup of work sites. Given the number of attachments available for the Skid Steer, it can become the most versatile piece of equipment on the job site.
Tractor Loader Backhoe (TLB)
The most common piece of equipment on any job site, the TLB is used for everything from simple trenching to digging footings to more elaborate excavations such as basements, as well as loading of materials onto dump trucks, backfilling, simple grading, and hoisting.
Crawler Excavator
A less common but larger and quicker excavating machine, the Crawler Excavator is most commonly used for projects where digging out larger areas or holes is required. This machine is capable of digging or excavating at distances out of reach of the TLB.
Bulldozer
Although this machine has the capability to move a significant amount of earth, this is additionally a finishing machine used to skim large areas of ground either to a rough grade or to whatever final grade is called for in the site plan.
